Getting Started
Connecting your Ring account
To get started, open your Ring account and go to Account, then Apps, then Explore Ring Appstore. Find Beside Care, select the cameras you want to monitor, and confirm the connection. You will be redirected to Beside Care to sign in and complete setup. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and no new hardware is required.
Adding caregivers
You can invite family members or other caregivers to receive digest emails and alerts. Go to Settings in the portal, then add their email address under Caregivers. Each caregiver will receive the same digests you do, so everyone stays informed.
Choosing your digest schedule
Beside Care sends three digests per day: overnight (covering evening to morning), midday (covering morning to afternoon), and evening (covering afternoon to evening). You can adjust delivery times in your Settings to match your schedule.
Setting up SMS alerts
To receive priority care alerts by text message, go to Settings in the portal and add your phone number under Notifications. Once enabled, you will receive an SMS whenever a concern is flagged, such as prolonged inactivity or unsteady movement.
Understanding Your Digests
What is in a digest email?
Each digest email includes a narrative summary of your loved one's activity during that time window. You will see key moments described in plain language, any concerns worth noting (such as unusual quiet or unsteady movement), and a wellbeing snapshot. If something notable happened, the email includes a link to review the specific moment in your Ring app.
The three digest types
Overnight digests cover the evening through early morning, summarizing nighttime activity like getting up or moving around the house. Midday digests cover the morning through early afternoon, including typical routines like kitchen activity and movement between rooms. Evening digests cover the afternoon through evening, wrapping up the day's activity.
What are observer notes?
Observer notes appear when Beside Care notices something that breaks from the usual pattern. For example, if your loved one is typically active in the kitchen by 8 AM but there has been no motion by 10 AM, the system will note this as an unusual quiet period. These notes help you spot changes in routine without having to watch camera feeds yourself.
What are flagged events?
Flagged events are triggered when the AI detects something that may need your attention, such as unsteady movement, prolonged stillness during a time when activity is expected, or a possible fall. When an event is flagged, you will receive an immediate alert (by email and SMS if enabled) with a description of what was detected and a link to review the moment in your Ring app.
Why Wasn't My Activity Captured?
Camera was offline
If a camera goes offline (due to WiFi issues, power outage, or other reasons), Beside Care cannot receive motion events from it. Check the Ring app to verify your camera's status. If it shows as offline, try power cycling the camera and checking your WiFi connection.
No motion was detected
Ring cameras only trigger motion events when movement is detected within the camera's field of view. If your loved one was in a part of the room outside the camera's range, or if motion sensitivity is set too low, events may not be captured. You can adjust motion sensitivity in the Ring app under Device Settings.
The clip was not ready in time
Beside Care processes video clips shortly after a motion event occurs. Occasionally, Ring may not have the clip ready in time for processing. When this happens, the digest will use motion event data only (timestamps and which camera triggered) rather than a clip-based summary. You may see a note like "based on motion data only" in your digest when this occurs.
How many events can Beside Care handle?
There is no daily limit on motion event summaries. Beside Care groups nearby motion events into sessions and summarizes each session automatically. Even very active cameras are fully covered.
What do coverage notes in your digest mean?
"Coverage looks consistent" means all expected cameras reported motion events during the digest period, and clips were available for AI review. "Based on motion data only" means the AI could not access the video clip for that event, so the summary is based on the motion timestamp and camera name rather than a visual review of the clip.
Troubleshooting
Ring re-authorization
Sometimes the connection between Beside Care and your Ring account needs to be refreshed. If you notice digests are missing or cameras are not showing activity, go to Settings in the portal and reconnect your Ring account. This re-establishes the secure connection without affecting your Ring settings.
Not receiving digest emails
First, check your spam or junk folder, as digest emails may be filtered there. If you do not find them, verify that your email address is correct in Settings. Also confirm that your digest schedule is enabled and that the delivery times have not been set to a window you are not expecting.
Not receiving SMS alerts
Verify that your phone number is correctly entered in Settings under Notifications, and that SMS alerts are enabled. If everything looks correct and you are still not receiving texts, check with your mobile carrier to ensure short code messages are not being blocked.
Camera shows as offline
If a camera appears offline in Beside Care, start by checking its status in the Ring app. If it is also offline there, try power cycling the camera (unplug it for 10 seconds, then plug it back in) and verify that your WiFi network is working. Once the camera is back online in Ring, it will automatically resume sending events to Beside Care.
Privacy & Your Data
What does Beside Care store?
Beside Care stores text summaries of activity, flagged event data, motion event metadata (timestamps and camera names), and your account settings (email, phone number, digest preferences, caregiver list). This data is used to generate your digests and track patterns over time.
What does Beside Care never store?
Beside Care never stores video footage, audio recordings, or images from your cameras. We do not write video to disk at any point. Live View access is entirely controlled through your Ring account and is never recorded by Beside Care.
How is video handled?
When a motion event occurs, Beside Care accesses the short video clip from Ring, processes it in memory using AI to generate a text summary, and then immediately discards the clip. The video is never written to disk or stored anywhere on our systems. Only the text summary is kept.
Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account from Settings in the Beside Care portal. This permanently removes all your data, including summaries, flagged events, account settings, and caregiver connections. This action cannot be undone.
Who can see my data?
Only the caregivers you have added to your account can see your digests and alerts. The Beside Care team cannot access your camera feeds, Live View, or recorded clips. Our support team can see account metadata (such as email and subscription status) for troubleshooting purposes, but never your activity summaries or camera data.
